Like all of the other Inuit children, she is shamed for being Aboriginal, shorn of her hair, forbidden to speak her native language, and instructed to lie about the horrible conditions at the school. And, true enough, she is abused and belittled for the two years she is there. She begs and begs her parents, who warn her that the school will be harder than she thinks. Olemaun (Margaret) really wants to learn how to read, like her older half-sister. What did you like about the book? This is a first person account of an Inuit girl leaving her home in the Arctic Circle to go to Catholic residential school in the 1940’s.
