The Cruciform Building of University College Hospital, where Orwell died in 1950 The ailing author was admitted in September 1949 and died of tuberculosis on 21 January 1950. His final "home" might be considered University College Hospital (now the Cruciform Building). His first London home was in the now demolished Cromwell Crescent in Earl's Court, where he lived with his mother from 1917. ![]() He would lodge with friends, and even slept rough during his "down and out" research. He never settled anywhere for more than a few years, and often moved several times within a year.
